Amsterdam's Jewish Historical Quarter is less than one square kilometer, but dense with monuments, synagogues, and history. There's the stately Portuguese Synagogue, the fascinating Jewish Historical Museum, the engaging Children's Museum, and the moving Hollandsche Schouwburg (National Holocaust Memorial). This ticket gets you access to all the sights in the area.
Not far from Amsterdam's Waterlooplein flea market, the Jewish Cultural Quarter sits nestled in the leafy Plantage district. It features a number of significant sites worth seeing. Make a day (or half-day) of wandering this area.
The Jewish Historical Museum is spread throughout four monumental synagogues. The permanent exhibitions tell the story of Jewish culture and history in the Netherlands. One part of it - the Children's Museum - is set up as a home of the a typical Jewish family. Learn about the daily life of the Hollander family as you (and your young ones) follow your lively guide Max the Matzo around.
Directly opposite the Jewish Historical Museum is the stunning 17th century Portuguese Synagogue. Unassuming on the outside, the interior of this holy place is stunning - and still used for services today.
No trip here is complete without a visit to the Hollandsche Schouwburg (now the National Holocaust Memorial). This is where Jews were processed before deportation to concentration camps. A monument and memorial room here pay tribute to their memory.
