Head to the Carcavelos Surf School on Praia de Cacavelos to meet up with your accredited instructor. Founded in 2001, Carcavelos is one of the oldest surf schools in Portugal and has taught more than 10,000 people to surf.

Get outfitted with a wetsuit and surfboard and then receive a quick safety briefing from the instructor. Practice some basic techniques on the sand, including how to push up off your board and maintain balance while on the waves.

Once you’ve mastered the basics on land, take to the water and practice riding the waves. The instructor will accompany you to help and can provide useful tips as you go along. When not in the water, enjoy the sunbeds available on the sand and clean up after your lesson in the shower facilities and changing rooms.
